<span style="background: white; color: black; font-family: "Segoe UI","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 115%;">The Dodgers are coming
off a season where they won 94 games winning the NL West for the fourth time in
the last seven seasons sounds pretty good right? The only thing is they have
made zero World Series appearances. The roster flaws that have been costing them
in October become all too clear this season. The Dodgers were a dominant
regular season team but they simply weren’t built for deep playoff runs. It became clear to ownership that Ned Collette
had taken the Dodgers as far as he could. A change was needed so exit Colletti
and enter one the premiere baseball minds in the game in Andrew Friedman as he
was given the title President of Baseball Operations. Obvious alert: This was a
huge upgrade and absolutely vital to make to take the next step forward as an
organization in search of a championship. Notice all the teams that have been winning
the majority of World Series lately have had excellent GM and Manager duos? Boston, Cardinals & Giants. Friedman then
added Farhan Zaidi to be his General Manager and Josh Byrnes a former GM
himself to be his Vice President of Ops . All 3 of them highly regarded as top
level baseball brains and together they form the decision making trinity, The
Dream Team if you will. This signified a new era in Dodgers baseball. In the socialist revenue sharing and luxury
tax era it is no longer viable to just throw money at your problems the Dodgers
needed to get smarter to work around the CBA and they apparently did.

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Segoe UI","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 115%;">
I have identified 5 ways the new front office

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Segoe UI","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 115%;">
1. <span style="background: white; color: black; font-family: "Segoe UI","sans-serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">Upgraded Defense <span style="color: black; font-family: "Segoe UI","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 115%;">
Let’s Start
by penciling in Joc Pederson in CF the organizations best option, by doing so it
allows you to move Yasiel Puig back to RF which now upgrades that spot
defensively. Matt Kemp's defensive metrics show he simply a good OF anymore. So on paper they
improved in CF as well as RF.
<span style="background: white; color: black; font-family: "Segoe UI","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 115%;">Let’s move to the
infield, The Dodgers replaced one of the worst defensive SS in all of baseball with
Jimmy Rollins who ranked number 1 last year in SS fielding percentage. http://espn.go.com/mlb/stats/fielding/_/position/ss/order/true
We all remember the bleeder up the middle that Hanley couldn't get in the playoffs
that cost Clayton Kershaw. <span style="color: black; font-family: "Segoe UI","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 115%;">
Yasmani
Grandal coming over from the Padres a former 1st round pick is
entering his prime years and it’s widely known around baseball for being the
best pitch framer in game, on the contrary metrics show AJ Ellis as not being
strong in a stat category at all. A stat Andrew Friedman values significantly,
remember Friedman rolled with Jose Molina in Tampa who rates the best framing
catcher since the stat was introduced. So
in Grandal you get upgrade defensively as well as gain about 15 more HR
offensively out of the catcher position as well. <span style="background: white; color: black; font-family: "Segoe UI","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 115%;">Dee Gordon was far from a Gold Glove caliber 2B, Howie Kendrick is a slight upgrade
defensively. The real kicker is the Dodgers get a middle of the order type bat
to help offset some of the production lost. Remember Kendrick hit cleanup for
the Angels at times.
<span style="background: white; color: black; font-family: "Segoe UI","sans-serif"; line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt;">The Dodgers upgraded at 5 positions defensively <span style="background: white; color: black; font-family: "Segoe UI","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 115%;">This pitching
staff doesn’t need a lot of runs scored for them. Name a team to win a World Series with
defense as bad as Hanley & Gordon manning the middle? You can’t.

<span style="background: white; color: black; font-family: "Segoe UI","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 115%;">2. <span style="background: white; color: black; font-family: "Segoe UI","sans-serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">Roster flexiblity.<span style="background: white; color: black; font-family: "Segoe UI","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 115%;"> <span style="color: black; font-family: "Segoe UI","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 115%;">
How
many outfielders is too many? Did you really want 1/3 of the the 25 man roster
to be made up of OF? It's clear they did
not want to trade their now perennial All- Star Yasiel Puig & Stan Kasten
has made it clear they want one of their home grown talents to crack the
starting lineup so they want to see what Joc Pederson can do. With those 2 off the table Matt Kemp was the
asset with the most trade value, given Andre Ethier is simply unproductive and
Carl Crawford's health is always a question mark and of course both those
contracts are out of control. On top of that they have a very undervalued Scott
Van Slyke who would probably hit 25 HR if given the ABs. Not being able to move Andre Ethier basically
forced the Kemp trade in my book.

<span style="background: white; color: black; font-family: "Segoe UI","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 115%;">3. <span style="background: white; color: black; font-family: "Segoe UI","sans-serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">Kept top
prospects. <span style="color: black; font-family: "Segoe UI","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 115%;">
Andrew
Friedman has managed to completely overhaul his roster without giving up the
Big 3 prized possessions. They managed to keep Corey Seager some scouts describe as the next Troy
Tulowitski, Julio Urias a 18 year left
hander who had a sub 2.5 era this season and of course they kept Joc Pederson. The
Dodgers seem to be part moneyball with a splash of win the damn game. They won’t
be afraid to spend on key pieces but they understand keeping one eye on the
present and one on the future is the correct approach. While it's universally believed the Dodgers
aren't done making moves what's clear is The Dodgers have all of their trade
bullets still available. The Dodgers picked up Jimmy Rollins to hold down the
fort while Seager gets ready, Howie Kendrick has 1 yr left and that
could possibly open up a spot for Alex Guerrero or someone else. Dodgers
decided to dump Kemp with that big contract and beat up body to clear space for the younger
controllable mega prospect.

<span style="background: white; color: black; font-family: "Segoe UI","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 115%;">4. <span style="background: white; color: black; font-family: "Segoe UI","sans-serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">Streamline
payroll.<span style="background: white; color: black; font-family: "Segoe UI","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 115%;"> <span style="color: black; font-family: "Segoe UI","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 115%;">
The
Dodgers have a out of control payroll because they wanted to become competitive
right away and picking up all those Red Sox was simply used as a quick fix to
make the team more exciting but it was never their intention to keep adding on
to the payroll. Baseball has made it tough on clubs with the luxury tax getting
up to the point of matching dollar for dollar if over the cap. While they won't
be afraid to spend to win they needed to reallocate funds and spend a little
more wisely. Dumping Kemp's contract opens up the option to go after a high
priced player that could fit into a position they actually need via
picking up a contract via trade or free agency.

5. <span style="background: white; color: black; font-family: "Segoe UI","sans-serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">Improved
team chemistry. <span style="color: black; font-family: "Segoe UI","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 115%;">
Do you
think it was easy for Don Mattingly to juggle the OF situation last year? It
was dysfunctional. How about adding Pederson into the mix this year? Andre
Ethier already was crying he wanted to start or be traded and that happened in
December over a 100 days before the season starts. How about letting 2 injury plagued starters on the wrong side of age thirty and replacing them with guys about to enter their primes.
<span style="color: black; font-family: "Segoe UI","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 115%;">Matt Kemp has shown he
doesn't perform when you play him in LF his production falls off the table
dramatically its almost like he pouts when stuck out there. Don Mattingly has
said Kemp will never play CF again as long he is the manager. Why would he say
that? Well Kemp has lost his quickness, he is no longer that explosive player
anymore and forget about being a good CF he barely holds his own in RF. Face it
Dodger fans Yasiel Puig is the future, he is controllable on decent contract, he is several seasons from
even entering his prime and he is already a 2 time All Star and 1 of 3 players
currently playing to have received MVP votes in every season he has played
(Miguel Cabrera & Jose Abreu are the other 2 players). With Puig with his
best days ahead - Matt Kemp appears to be on the decline, I believe Friedman
and the trinity thinks what Kemp did in the 2nd half last season was Matt's
absolute peak. While it hurts to trade him off for what appears to be a unsexy
return you need to look at the big picture.

for Kemp return. Had surplus in OF, hole at SS, need for Overall roster upgrade was goal.<span style="background: white; color: black; font-family: "Segoe UI","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 115%;">

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim fans are far too concerned
with trying to resign Torii Hunter. Wake up people. While I am a huge fan of
the guy and losing him will be disheartening to the Angels, Anaheim has more
important things to worry about this offseason.
While I don’t agree with not resigning Hunter, fans have to realize the
Angels now have a Grand Canyon sized hole in their pitching staff with the loss
of Ervin Santana, Dan Haren and its inevitable Zack Greinke will sign with
someone else, probably the Texas Rangers,
Thanks Arte let another star player leave to a rival.

What are the Angels going to do to replace the 3 quality starters they are letting go? This would be my concern Angels
fans considering pitching was the main reason the Angels missed out on the
playoffs for a 3rd consecutive season. The idea of trying to find quality
arms to replace over 550 innings lost with those 3 gone is a daunting task and
I am not sure that Jerry Dipoto or any GM can find 3 quality arms in 1 offseason.

While I understand Torii is a very likable player and I am
right there with you with not wanting to lose him especially to a contender like the Rangers,
Tigers or Red Sox we have to understand he shouldn’t be the first priority this
offseason get over it. It’s pretty clear management
wants to use Peter Bourjos next season, is that a mistake? Probably but it
seems to have been predetermined. Let me
clear that up, its not a mistake because Peter is a horrible player but I have
to question why wasn’t Bourjos traded last season for a pitcher? Teams
were and still remain interested in the guy. How about the Atlanta Braves this
offseason who have an excess of starting
pitchers and appear to be losing Michael Bourne and would be looking for a Center
Fielder to replace him. Jair Jurrgens looks to be on the trading block. There are many options and more than a few teams looking for a CF.

Lets get back to last season. The Angels outfield was already maxed out with quality bats, Mike Trout, Torii Hunter, Mark Trumbo and Vernon Wells. Why did
they keep Peter Bourjos when you have 4 outfielders already? Can someone explain why he wasn’t used as a centerpiece in a package deal to go out and
get an arm last season let alone this offseason especially now when the Angels seem to be desperate for starting pitching? I’m still scratching my head
over this. I got to say Peter Bourjos did look good
riding the pine though didn't he? He was a valuable asset chewing seeds on the
bench next to Maicer - he definitely helped the Angels riding the bench more than
a pitcher would. If Dipoto didn't move Peter last season it’s pretty clear they knew all along that they wanted to use him
this season. The Angels management never
really wanted to make it a priority to sign Hunter. Whether you agree or not that seems to be the
case as reports have come out that Bourjos will now split time in Center Field and Left Field as Trout will move to Left Field some games. Another questionable move but that can be dealt with when it actually happens.

What are the Angels options. Well the first priority would be to resign
Zack Greinke and pay him what he wants anything to keep him in the rotation. If Greinke goes to Texas it is going to be a double whammy for the
Angels not only will they lose an ace, their number one rival will become even
stronger and put the Angels further behind the 8 ball. If Greinke isn’t willing to
resign with Anaheim then then there are other options? There certainly is pitching available albeit not as good of options but still serviceable arms are out there. I would look to Anibal Sanchez and try signing him to a long term deal and double it up with making a run at the very solid and underrated Hiroki Kuroda to a one year deal as a stop gap until next offseason. Kyle Lohse should also be looked at as he has been racking up quality innings the last couple seasons for the Cardinals and has postseason experience.

There needs to be a sense of urgency to nail down at least 2 starting pitchers to fill that massive 550 plus innings lost this offseason. What will happen? No one knows. One thing is for certain if the Angels don't get help on the mound don't look for them to be a serious World Series threat next season. Arte Moreno seems to get a pass from the Angels faithful read this to see what I think of Moreno's shaky ownership http://diamondclubdirt.blogspot.com/2012/10/arte-party-killer.html Why Moreno gets a pass and other sports owners take heat from the media like New York Knicks owner James Dolan is beyond me. Many say it's the GM's job but the bottom line is the owner is the one signing the checks and has final say in all transactions.

Angels fans have a real dislike for Mo Vaughn and I really can't understand why? I have never heard anything nice said about the guy in southern california. Fans act like the guy didn't produce for the Halos, like he was a complete lazy bust. Have you even bothered to take a look at the numbers? If you had you would see he was a very productive player up until his injury back in 2001. I find it interesting that Vaughn's numbers compare nicely to Albert Pujols stats this season.
Total Bases 313

While it looks like Albert gets the best of him in season 1 it might be difficult for Pujols to keep up with Vaughn after completing season 2.
Mo Vaughn's second season with Anaheim he played in
161 games
and had over 700 plate appearances.
He hit 36 HR with 117 RBI
with an OPS. of over .860.

THAT WOULD BE 69 homers and 225 RBI in two seasons

Given Albert's numbers this season I think it would be considered a pretty good year if he could reach Vaughn's 2nd season power stats. Let that soak in for a sec.

The fact that Albert Pujols will have to have a better season next year just to keep up with Mo Vaughn's Angels totals should say something. Vaughn looks far from a lazy bust so far. If you expected Vaughn to carry the same average he did in Fenway then you probably didn't think did you? I mean suddenly 215 foot jam shot fly balls aren't doubles.

If you look at Mo's numbers and compare them with where he would rank in today's game he would still be considered an elite 1B. Which means the Angels did get 2 great seasons out of the guy and isn't that better then 4 or 5 below average seasons? In a world of bad contracts it could of been a whole lot worse. If he doesn't rupture that tendon who knows how his tenure with Anaheim plays out. I would assume he would of continued being a very productive power hitter in the middle of the order and poor Scott Spiezio would of never got a chance.

Vaughn was a very fine player he finished in the top 5 of the MVP voting 3 times. winning it back in 1995.

Arte passed on me. Guess he didn't want 68 HR in 2 Seasons.

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim have now missed the playoff's 3 seasons in a row. Unexceptable. Seems like every expert is willing to blame anything and everything but the owner himself. Arte Moreno has signed a handful of horrible contracts and has let go of guys that went on to have career years with other organizations. It's easy to blame Scioscia or Dipoto and before that Reagins for the teams lack of success lately but I feel it's time to put some of the blame on the head man in charge.

Let's start with the first bad contract Moreno signed off on, Gary Mathews Jr. Arte okays a 5 year deal worth 50 Million dollars. 50 million for a outfielder that never hit over 20 HR and only one season where he hit over .300. Please keep in mind the guy played for Texas where everyone rakes. What was Arte thinking? How bad was Mathews? The Angels actually paid $21.5 million on Mathews remaining contract just to get rid of him as the Mets picked him up.

Then of course the infamous Scott Kazmir trade were they didn't really lose that much trading Tampa Bay infielder Sean Rodriguez and a pitching prospect but boy did the Angels have to eat that contract. In Scott's brief time with the Angels spanning 3 seasons he went 11-17 with a 5.13 ERA while only managing to pitch 188 innings in that span. The Angels finally bit the bullet and released Kazmir even though he still $14.5 million left on his contract. Talk about robbery, kids this is one reason why guaranteed contracts makes baseball a better sport to play then football.

Next we look at the Vernon Wells contract that the Angels took off the hands of Toronto. While I am a fan of Wells it was clearly a move the Angels wish they could have back. Vernon before coming to the Angels already looked to be in the decline of his very solid career but when he joining Anaheim his numbers really fell of the cliff. A career .280 hitter with the Jays over 12 years Wells has dropped all the way down to .220 with the Angels over the past 2 seasons. The performance just hasn't been consistent enough for any of the fans liking and hardly up to par for a guy making nearly 20 million a season.

And of course last off season there was the huge 10 year 254 million dollar deal that will have the Angels paying Albert Pujols until he is well no one really knows for sure how old he is right? After signing the mega deal in Pujols much like every player that gets a mega deal they struggle at first. See Jason Werth, Carl Crawford, Alex Rodriguez, Carlos Beltran etc. While the deal isn't going to hurt the Angels in the short term it looks like the back end of the deal could turn into another A-Rod type situation where the bat speed won't be the same resulting in his power numbers not living up to the contract. Of course if the Angels manage to win a World Series or 2 before the end of his contract I think Angels fans will be willing to except Albert's deal as being successful.

These of course were the deals the Angels did pull off but what about the contracts they let slip away? Mike Napoli wasn't resigned and went on to a All-World Catcher with division rival Texas. Arte let's him go and Napoli turns into a 30 HR .320 batting average guy the very next year in a position where the Angels got absolutely no production out of. Grant it Napoli only hit .238 in his final season with the Angels but he did manage to blast 26 HR in 140 games and that will work people especially when his replacement Jeff Mathis hit .174 with 3 HR.

Of course everyone remembers Arte being stubborn and not being willing to give Adrian Beltre that extra year on his free agent contract. Result? Texas grabs him and Beltre becomes the best 3B in baseball. Do you think the Angels could of used a 3B that hit over the past 2 seasons hit .315, drove in over 200 runs and hit 68 HR? What the hell was Arte thinking? Scared to sign off an extra year but was willing to give Albert a 10 year deal? Come on, that's being a clown owner.

Lastl but definitely not the least important he oversees Fernando Rodney leaving to go to Tampa Bay. After a bad season with the Angels Rodney turns in one of the best seasons a closer has ever had. Now certainly no one saw that coming but does it really matter? We are seeing a trend of bad moves time and and time again. What seemed to be the Angels problem this season? Was it the bullpen? Yeah i think they had something to do with the Angels struggles this season. A bullpen of Rodney, Ernesto Frieri and Scott Downs on the backend would of made for a potent bullpen and certainly would of pushed the Angels into the playoffs and probably would of won them the division even after the horrible start. Fernando's WAR of 3.7 alone pushes the Angels into a Wild Card position.

I understand the owner hires a General Manager to make personal decisions but people have to realize the owner is the one that signs off on deals after all he is signing everyone's paychecks. The biggest flaws on the Angels in recent seasons have been 3B, the Catcher position and the bullpen. Wow, think if the Angels didn't sign Pujols and had Beltre at 3B, Napoli at Catcher with Trumbo and Morales switching off at 1B and DH along with Rodney in the pen. What kind of team would we be looking at? Probably the best team in baseball while weakening the Texas Rangers who have been a dominant force in the AL during the same span.

Arte come on man are you ever going to make a decent decision for the Halos?

A-Rod is the man at the moment that everyone is trashing for not performing up to standards. Let's compare A-Rod to a local huge contract underachiever - no i'm not talking about Albert Pujols, stop it of course I'm talking about Vernon Wells you already saw his name in the title of the article. In keeping with the what have you done for me lately mindset I will break down key stats from just the last 3 seasons.

While Angels fans think that Vernon Wells contract is like roster carcinogen it really isn't any worse then what the Yankees are saddled with in A-Rod's deal. Angels fans fail to realize that while Wells average has fallen off the map he is still a power threat and plays a great LF.

In fact his stats are pretty much in line with that season given he still has 1 more start. Improving in every possible way while currently 20-6 is going to have to be the favorite at this point. He is now tied for 1st in Wins while 1st in the league in ERA and is 2nd in Strikeouts. He has already been screwed out of starting the All Star game let's not make it this award.
My Resentment towards the losing candidates.
Johnny Cueto- My only fantasy player that didn't under perform this season. Thank you.
Ardolis Chapman- You are a reliever. Go win that award.
Matt Cain- Perfect game yes but his numbers just don't match up.
Gio Gonzalez- 6th in ERA and 4th in K's. leads league in Wins. Wins are overrated.
Craig Kimbrel- You are a reliever.

AL MVP Award: MIKE TROUT. Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.
I am aware the Miguel Cabrera has put up better offensive numbers than Trout if you look at the raw offensive stats. I ask you however isn't the objective of an offensive player to drive runs in and to score runs. This is the only way to win a ball game so therefore it is deemed important you see? If you add Miguel Cabrera's RBI + Runs Scored you get a total of 239. Mike Trouts total equal 202 but it took Miguel Cabrera 140 more AB's to reach that higher total. Given Trout's projected totals it becomes a wash = Both are having outstanding seasons. I am going to get why you shouldn't be fooled by the Triple Crown numbers in a second.
What separates Trout from Cabrera is the defense. Trout plays an amazing CF and Cabrera well tries to play 3B and not get hurt. When you factor in runs Trout has prevented with his superior speed and athleticism it puts him over the top not only in my eyes but more importantly it puts him ahead in the WAR category.
While Cabrera may walk away with the Triple Crown according to the stat WAR (Wins Above Replacement) he isn't even as valuable of player to his team this season as he was last year. He has a WAR of 6.6 as compared to a 7.3 last year. Mike Trout's current WAR is a ridiculous 10.6 which puts him in the 25 BEST SEASONS EVER. Ding Ding Ding Good night now.
His Slugging Percentage and OPS are higher and he already has more total bases and Home Runs. He is currently 1 behind last seasons total in RBI's so he will pass that category up as well. Is he going to win the real award going back to back? probably not. Is he having the best season in the National League? Yes.
My Resentment towards the losing candidates.
Buster Posey- I'm not sure you are the best catcher in the National League.
David Wright- You don't hit for enough power for my liking.
Andrew McCutchen- Not a good enough 2nd half.
Yadier Molina- Posey making you look not as special as you are.

The Resentee's is a clown award show... or something bro.

Let's start with the most obvious award given out in the history of this award show.
The AL Rookie of the Year : MIKE TROUT. Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim The 21 year old sensation just might be having the best rookie season baseball has ever seen. If dig deeper then just the offensive numbers and see he holds down CF with his sprinter like speed. With a WAR of 10.6 Trout would be considered the most valuable player according to the stat. The WAR stat stands for Wins Above Replacement. That means he gave the Angels 10 more wins then they would have if they used Peter Bourjos and that would be the highest total in MLB since the juicy Barry Bonds . In fact it would put this season inside the top 25 WAR seasons of all time. WAR is the number one stat most geeks are basing players value on these days.

The NL Rookie of the Year: BRYCE HARPER. Washington Nationals.
But how can you say that he doesn't even have the best rookie numbers? Wake up people there is more to baseball then batting average. Bryce Harper is playing a major role on a team that won the East in a runaway fashion. Harper's speed and arm make him a valuable asset in the field as he can play all the OF spots effectively. With great range and a cannon that has yielded 8 Assists his defense makes him a game changer. While only hitting .260 which isn't that bad he has run into 20 Home Runs while on pace to reach almost a 100 runs scored. His hype was off the charts. Has he lived up to it? I believe so, his season is being diminished by Trout jumping off the charts.

The AL Comeback Player of the Year: FERNANDO RODNEY. Tampa Bay Rays. Sorry Adam Dunn.
Coming off a horrible season for the Angels he lands with Tampa Bay and magically has turned it around in a way that would be cheesy if you saw it in a Disney movie.
He goes from a season in which he had a WHIP of 1.69 and a ERA of 4.50 with 3 Saves
to a season with a WHIP of 0.77 and a ERA of 0.64 and 44 Saves. He currently has a WAR of 3.4.
You realize when closer Eric Gagne won the NL Cy Young Award he had a WHIP of .69 and a ERA of 1.20 with a WAR of 3.6 Pretty close.

The NL Comeback Player of the Year: ADAM LaROCHE. Washington Nationals. This was my hardest category to crown a winner. Of course A.J. Burnett had a solid season along with Ryan Ludwick, Pedro Alvarez and Stephen Strasburg and you can be generous and throw Adam Wainright in there after his second half bounce back.
If you look at LaRoche's track record this season doesn't jump out at you like it's an outstanding season because really it's just another one of his solid under the radar seasons at the plate. He wins the award in my eyes because last season for him was simply a disaster. Playing in only 40 games he hit a weak .172 in 150 AB's. 3 of those 26 hits were bombs. This season he comes all the way back and not only manages a full season healthy he is hitting .269 with 32 HR with the same WAR value as Ferando Rodney.

The AL Manager of the Year: BUCK SHOWALTER.
Buck has already won 2 of these thing before and in my opinion he is the best manager in baseball.
The Orioles were picked by many to finish dead last in the brutally tough AL East and now Buck has the O's battling for the division as we enter the last week of the season. No manager has done more with less expectations than that crazy Joey Maddon down in Tampa took his boys to the Series. Somehow the Orioles seem to win every single close game, the only team in playoff contention with a negative run differential means the O's are actually getting outscored this season. How are they winning these games? Obviously the players are coming through in the late innings but Showalter is using the matchup's to his advantage to the point it's schooling other coaches. As CP3 would put it "Buck is 'son-ing' them"
Showalter has always been a master mind as a manager as he built the foundations for 2 dynasties before departing to reap the rewards. He manged and basically architected the Yankees before Torre walked into that cushy gig. Then again he was out in Arizona before The Unit and Schilling took over. It's nice to see Buck back in the spotlight if the Orioles make it in watch it.

The NL Manager of the Year:MIKE MATHENY. St. Louis Cardinals.
Not much of surprise to me seeing I had the Cardinals making the playoff's but it is still pretty remarkable what Matheny accomplished this season. All Mike had to do was find a way to replace all that offense left behind when the Albert Pujols bailed to Anaheim and having to do that while following one of the best managers in the history of the game. Seem manageable?
Well then try losing your Ace Chris Carpenter for the season all while your other ace Adam Wainright is trying to find it again coming off Tommy John having very little effectiveness the first half. Okay then imagine losing Lance Berkman the majority of the season. Matheny has dealt with some serious setbacks his first season at the top and has the Cardinals in position to hold off the rest of the contenders for the second Wild Card. Turns out they also just happen to have playoff tested Chris Carpenter lined up to start the play in game.

IS JOSH HAMILTON WORTH THE RISK?

what steroid allegations?

BTW I am aware Josh Hamilton is a great player. Save it. You don't see me writing about Juan Rivera do you? Just analyzing the situation.

JOSH HAMILTON is going to the highest profiled free agent as soon as some National League team beats the Rangers in the World Series again. The Rangers seem to have very little interest in paying anywhere near the amount the former MVP is expecting to get. Does this not throw up stop signs to other potential buyers? The organization that knows him the best isn't all that excited to keep him. With that being said, I ask is Josh Hamilton going to be worth the risk of signing?

Josh Hamilton has been through a lot, we all know the story by now. His drug abuse is well documented and then there was the steroid allegations and his problem with alcohol, tobacco and now caffeine. Everything this guy touches he can potentially become addicted to it.
Josh Hamilton struggled for 2 months this season because he couldn't get his mind off chewing tobacco. The report came out he tried quitting tobacco and shortly after he began that epic slump which ESPN documented like it was a Tebow a story. He went back to chaw.

Can you believe Hamilton's poor play has been blamed on 2 legal substances he has taken this season? What was number 2? What cost him to miss games in September? Red Bull of course. Apparently he has been drinking to many caffeinated energy drinks. Seriously? Does this guy not have any self control? Since he can't quit his tobacco habit it seems he is slamming Red Bull and chawing from the time he gets to the park until the end of the game. This can cause a problem in the body especially a body that has been through as much as Hamilton's. It was reported he couldn't see straight.
It's great the Rangers have a sizeable first place lead in the West but what if this eye trouble takes place during the ALCS or World Series? I'm not to happy as an owner if my star player can't play because he wanted wings.

A body that has dealt with years of crack cocaine a long with alcohol abuse doesn't seem like he would have the best immune system. Although strong physically Hamilton is very fragile.

Let's skip pass the years when he screwed the Tampa Bay back when he let the Rays entire organization down by never reaching the Bigs. What could of been with Hamilton, Crawford, Upton, Longoria with those pitching staffs. I'm sure the Devil Ray's GM at the time holds no resentment. While it's clear Josh Hamilton puts up monster numbers but he is one Red Bull away from a DL stint. That's some risk, not necessarily the type of guy I would be willing to open up my wallet for. Aside from worrying about all his habits off the field you have to worry about him breaking down on the field.

Hamilton's rookie season consisted of a couple DL stints. One for gasroenteritis and the other a hamstring strain. The steroids/HGH allegations surfaced when Josh missed some time because of a torn abdominal muscle which is common amongst the steroid players. 2008 is Hamilton's only full season where he played in 156 of the 162. In the 2009 season he had a sports hernia which cost him a career low in games. His MVP 2010 season was cut short in September after breaking some ribs. Of course last season we remember his broken arm caused by diving into home plate.

It seems to always be something with Josh Hamilton doesn't it? The team that eventually signs him is going to have to be okay with the idea of Hamilton not being in the lineup roughly 40 times a season- since that is about the average number of games he missed in his PRIME YEARS. He is turning 32 and that is an old beat up 32. The idea that he has had several alcohol related relapses to go a long with his inability to kick the tobacco habit he so desperately wants to quit is also concerning to an owner that will have to be willing to shell out around $120 million dollars.

At this point everyone has come to the assessment that I am hating on the great Josh Hamilton. Not true, I acknowledge he is a premiere outfielder when he is able to stay on the field but I have to question why any team would give him a 5 year deal. Assuming Hamilton is done taking drugs and drinking the lingering effects are still immeasurable and irreversable. The idea you are guaranteed huge years signing him is something I don't feel comfortable saying. It is going to be a gamble but a gamble that could payoff for the franchise willing to pay the MVP outfielder.

My guess in a desperate attempt at finding a respectable offense the San Francisco Giants are going to make a huge offer to lure Hamilton and add a bat around the Killer P's (Posey,Pablo,Pence) You add Hamilton to that lineup and keep him somewhat healthy that lineup instantly becomes NOT POOR.
IS MIKE SCIOSCIA THE RIGHT MANAGER FOR THE ANGELS MOVING FORWARD?

Entering his 13th season managing in the same clubhouse.

The average tenure for managers in today's Major League Baseball is less then 3.75 seasons. He has been with the Angels 10 more years than expected according to the data. It's my belief no manager should be with the same team more then 10 seasons total now of days. It is just my opinion as a manager your message grows old on the players. You can only give so many different kind of speeches. Players become too comfortable with you and that can become and usually does become a problem.

Have we given MIKE SCIOSCIA to much credit for the Angels success? I wouldn't go that far. I am actually in the camp that he is one of the best manager in baseball and has always been TONY LARUSSA's equal. So I have nothing against the guy, I just see the writing on the wall. While an Angels fan, I am not blinded by what has actually been going on the past few seasons.

YES I AM AWARE THE PROBLEM HAS BEEN THE PITCHING THIS SEASON. THE THING IS IT DOESN'T MATTER. LET'S CONTINUE SHALL WE...

Mike Scioscia's best asset as a manager just may be his ability to surround himself with premier baseball minds. While certainly not a fault, it has become a problem as coaches have come and gone. Is it a coincidence that the season Ron Roenicke left was the Angels last season in the playoffs?
Mike Scioscia's coaching staff in 2002 when he won the World Series had 3 soon to be managers all considered top tier. BUD BLACK. JOE MADDON, RON ROENICKE. and since then Scioscia has been considered a great manager. Scioscia hasn't taken the Angels to playoff's without at least one of these guys just sayin.

The Angels 2002's team roster had no stars on it. Not one unless you want to count the. 250 hitting TROY GLAUS. Compare that to the 2012 roster and it is a completely different type of team. We will get back to that in a second.

Scioscia has built his success managing a National League style. He basically brought small ball to the American League. Hitting and Running. Stealing. Bunting. blah blah. That was his calling card.
This seasons roster was not built for small ball. The team is no longer suited for that style of managing. Today's team is a high salary, high powered offense. While the Angels offense doesn't seem to be a problem if you look at the raw offensive numbers since they rank highly in runs scored but if you break it down game by game you start getting into a lot of games the offense didn't do anything.
Is Scioscia not comfortable managing a roster of star players? Or maybe I never gave JOE TORRE enough credit enough for how difficult it actually is.

The constant line up changes and splitting the playing time of the outfield all while putting guys in different positions every night is amateur hour. First month of the season fine but not the whole season. That should be going on down in Salt Lake not a team that was one of the favorites to win the World Series. Rotating guys in and out like a Little League All-Star coach is ridiculousness.

A roster full of power bats need to have a more consistent feel. You never saw the Yankees dynasty teams having the amount of drastic lineup changes on a night to night basis the way you see Scioscia changing it up.

Bottom line evaluating this season...
Mike Scioscia was handed the best hitter ALBERT PUJOLS in baseball before the season started. He was also given the best pitcher CJ WILSON available in the off season and the best rookie MIKE TROUT season in the history of baseball. Out of nowhere they get a dominant closer ERNESTO FRIERI while giving up nothing. Then at the deadline the Angels get the best available arm ZACK GREINKE. The Angels could have the MVP and Cy Young (although unlikely since he missed some starts.)

If a manager is given all that and can't make place in the top 5 teams in the American League then it's time to go. His fault or not Ask TERRY FRANCONA how it works, he has 2 World Series and by the way he won them a lot more recent and he was let go because his team had one bad month. Mike Scioscia hasn't taken the Angels to the playoff's for let's face it, way to long.

I think Terry Francona would be a perfect fit. The roster is similar to what he worked with in Boston. He also has already worked with GM JERRY DIPOTO. Francona has a track record of leading superstar driven teams. It would be perfect match for Scioscia to go take the Boston job as Bobby Valentine looks to not be coming back. Makes sense for both teams.
REGGIE JACKSON VS. ADAM DUNN

Statistical look at first 12 Seasons

Since Adam Dunn is only in his 12th season we see it only fair that we compare the stats of both sluggers up until that point. While Reggie Jackson goes down as a Hall of Fame player, it is in my opinion he just might be the most over rated player the game has ever seen; at least statistically speaking. I can prove it by merely comparing the current equivalent player in Adam Dunn. Yes, I am aware that this is a different era and ballparks are smaller but you will get my point by the end of this post.

Adam Dunn has had 8 seasons of hitting at least 35 Home Runs thru 12 seasons.

Reggie Jackson had 2 seasons of hitting at least 35 Home Runs thru 12 seasons.

It's pretty clear that they are very similar players with Reggie hitting for a slightly higher average while Dunn is hitting about a half dozen more bombs a year while walking more then 30 times more than Reggie a year. That is huge. Remember batting average especially with sluggers is the least useful stat in all of baseball.

Reggie Jackson was an 8 time All Star in his first 12 seasons. He received MVP votes 9 times in that span. Adam Dunn in the same amount of seasons? 2 All Star appearances and only 3 seasons were he received MVP votes. It's clear that playing for the A's and Yankees certainly helped Jackson's cause. Meaningful games and deep Playoff runs gave the cocky Reggie a platform to run his mouth and yeah he ran into a few in big moments.

Adam Dunn is almost the exact opposite. Always has been on crappy teams and he is a soft spoken guy. He certainly isn't looking for the camera the way Reggie <strike>did </strike>still does. I also think we have so many guys now that can hit 35 home runs a year that it devalues our opinion on Dunn because of that. Reggie allegedly played before the "juice" so a guy that could hit 35 plus bombs would get baseball fans wet pretty easily.

The testing done by Major League Baseball could be considered a waste of time except for the fact players are still getting caught. MLB uses the standard T/E Ratio Test. When given to the player the test measures the testosterone in your body to the epitestosterone produced in your body. Using the standard scale of 1 to 1, MLB allows players to have elevated testosterone levels in the body to be as high as 4 to 1. This means a player can have 4 times the level of testosterone in their body then the average human being and still not fail the test. This testing procedure which only costs $150 can not distinguish between natural and synthetic testosterone.

So what does this mean? This means players have many ways around passing these urine tests. The most common practice which is widely known about in the athletic community is known as micro dosing. Players can take low amounts of a synthetic testosterone because it clears the body's system fast enough to not go detected it's simple since you can only get tested while at the ball park according to the Union's agreement.

Former BALCO steroid guru Victor Conte broke it down like this "You finish a game, your ratio is 1 to 1, you rub the (synthetic testosterone) cream on your arm and your ratio can go up to 10 to 1, or 15 to 1. Six hours later, your T/E ratio is below 4 to 1. You've had the benefit of tissue repair, healing and recovery, and it promotes muscle growth. It makes muscles bigger, fresher, faster." -
http://www.sfgate.com/giants/ostler/article/Victor-Conte-sees-MLB-drug-test-loophole-3799949.php

It is clear that baseball doesn't mind players "juicing" because if they really wanted to stop players from using PED's then they would get rid of this amateur hour form of testing and switch over to a test called Carbon Isotope Ratio. This test costs a little more but it allows the lab to distinguish between natural and synthetic testosterone and can spot synthetic test in your body for up to 2 weeks after usage making it much harder to pass the urine tests that are being given on a regular basis.

To me it appears MLB wants to give the appearance that they are cracking down on players using Performance Enhancing Drugs by catching the occasional player dumb enough to not using the micro dosing method. If they nail a player here and there it gives the appearance that current system "is working" If MLB were to switch over to the Carbon Isotope method to many players would get busted resulting in a diminished product on the field ultimately it would be bad for the game.

The Player's Union does not allow blood to be drawn at all during season. So from the start of Opening Day to the last day of the season which includes Playoff's for the teams that make it, HGH can be taken without any consequences. As long as the growth hormone is out of your system come October then you escape being caught. So the idea that the steroid era is over is far from true. With the current testing implemented it is rather easy to avoid being caught.

In an announcement that came down earlier this afternoon the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim's Mike Trout was named Rookie of the Month for the 4th consecutive month. While no player has ever won the award 4 consecutive times, let alone 3 times, Ichiro Suzuki back in 2001 won the award 4 times that season. Barring some crazy Mike Trout should walk away with the award yet again in September making him the first rookie to ever take home the honor 5 times in their rookie campaign.

The Angels played 28 games in August and Trout hit .284 with 7 Home Runs, 19 RBI and 11 Stolen Bases. While not his best month it certainly is a month that most veterans would love to have.
The answer is no he won't but that doesn't mean he isn't the most productive 2B in the game right now. The Yankees best player is having another great season. The real question at this point is will he get to do some damage in October or are the Yankees going to pull a Red Sox - Braves of last season?
While not driving the ball out of the park he is still managing to drive a ton of runs across the plate. Of all the great 1-2 combo's in baseball Detroit has the highest 2 hitters in my rankings as Prince joins Miguel in the top 10 - shocker I know.
To me its looking more and more like Posey should be the NL MVP if the Giants hold off the Dodgers and win the West. All this production at the catching position is b-a-n-a-n-a-s.
5. Josh Hamilton. Texas Rangers. The roller coaster season of Hamilton continues. Currently sitting with borderline MVP stats if he catches fire these final few weeks he may just walk away with another AL MVP to go a long with his 2010 trophy. This is most likely his last season in Texas and I would like nothing more than a early exit this post season for the Rangers. Does anyone want to witness the Rangers lose 3 World Series in a row? I can't take those shots of Nolan Ryan fuming in his seat as Ron Washington lets another chance slip away.
While it is uncertain if this is going to be a standard season or the best season of his career one thing is certain, his potential greatness is limitless. The fact you can say he has a chance to be the best player of all time is something that should wow you - Remember he just turned 21.
2. Ryan Braun. Milwaukee Brewers. Last seasons tainted NL MVP in many ways is having an even better season this year while the SLG and HR are up. Ryan Braun has established himself along with Albert Pujols and Miguel Cabrera as the 3 great right handed hitters of this era. To go down as an all time great it certainly helps play in the playoffs. The question remains will Ryan Braun ever make back into October as a Brewer again to show off his bat on a national stage? With the emergence of the Reds and the Cardinals always being strong it's not looking good for the near future.
While his career stats aren't quite Albert Pujols numbers he has been the closest thing to "The Machine" MLB has seen in the Pujols era. Surpassing all his career averages in major stat categories with several weeks remaining its certain Cabrera is having another monster year with the bat. Baseball's most dangerous - best hitter for the entire 2012 season.
http://redsoxgirl46.mlblogs.com

The new Dodgers ownership has deep pockets and they aren't afraid to dig in. We all know the Guggenheim Group has changed the outlook of the team drastically in less than a season. Think about it last season we were still talking about parking lot safety and no one was going to the games. Now the Dodgers are in a playoff race and with these recent acquisitions they are the talk of baseball. When was the last time the Dodgers have led SportsCenter? Stan Kasten has dropped some serious paper on 4 superstar players and a Hawaiian in an attempt to create a major buzz in the crowded competitive LA sports market.

Hanley Ramirez is set to make $15.5 million dollars, Adrian Gonzalez 22 million, Carl Crawford 20.4 million and Josh Beckett is going to make $17 mill next season. The Dodgers are ALREADY locked in to pay $192.6 million dollars next season. That would be over a $100 mill over that of Frank McCourt's Opening Day lineup. The 4 new contracts listed above, alone would be more payroll than the entire Diamondback's Opening Day Roster. The time has finally come Dodgers fans, the Dodgers are now Yankees West - the way it should be. Big Market = Big Dollars Spent = Consistent Contenders

Of course there are people saying the Dodgers got the worse of the deal. That is still to be determined but the last thing the Dodgers are worried about is overpaying a few players. Do you really think having to over pay Crawford and Beckett 5 million dollars a year more than they are going to be worth means anything to them? The new owners needed to do whatever it took to get Adrian Gonzalez and they did. Guys like A-Gon don't exactly become available very often.
Carl Crawford was never a good fit in Boston and much like Albert Pujols did with the Angels put to much pressure on himself after signing such a big contract. He already shook off last season and was having a solid season before going down with elbow injury. A .282 average this season shows he was regaining his stroke before snapping his elbow, while going 5-5 in steal attempts shows nothing is wrong with his legs. It's clear he can still play and if he can get back to All-Star caliber that would make the Dodgers Out Field the best in all baseball.

But what about Josh Beckett he has been horrible for 2 seasons now! False. He was pretty damn good last season but the media certainly won't tell you that. The guy was 13-7 with a 2.89 ERA pitching in the AL East. (The great Matt Cain currently has a 2.83 era this season getting to pitch in the NL West) Beckett had a sub 3 era and you would think the guy was a bum if all you did was listen to sports talk. True he is tanking this season but lets look at it this way, that was with another team certainly not the Dodgers problem he has a clean slate starting tonight. Let's be honest if Josh Beckett pitches .500 ball the rest of the season and the Dodgers get into the Playoffs and he wins a playoff game everyone will love the guy. The guy is one of the best pressure game pitchers the game has ever seen essentially for Beckett his value is going to come down to how he pitches in the postseason... if the Dodgers get in. With Chad Billingsley on DL and Beckett's reputation as a great post season arm he would probably start game 2 of a playoff series behind Clayton Kershaw.

The Guggenheim group sits on 125 Billion dollars in assets. The Dodgers are already in negotiations for the upcoming TV contract which is about the expire. Stan Kasten is not a stupid guy he realized to get the maximum value out of the tv deal a lineup that had Adam Kennedy hitting cleanup (yes he did hit cleanup some games this season) was not going to cut it. Not in a market that is shared with the Angels and their high powered offense featuring Albert Pujols and Mike Trout. Not when the Lakers went out and added 2 more future Hall of Fame guys to their starting lineup. Stan realized a star powered lineup and a perennial contender will lead to a much bigger Cable deal after all it only makes sense the moves are not only genius but simply good business. How big of a deal are the Dodgers looking to get? Early estimates have the new Dodgers Television deal going down for roughly $4 Billion. Remember the ownership paid 2.6 Bill for the team. That would mean in just television rights alone they will come close to doubling their money. You think the Dodgers Ownership knows what they are doing? I do.

"Skip Bayless is such an idiot, the reason Derek Jeter is having a good years is because he's an AMAZING player! Any first ballot hall of famer..." - Some messageboard idiot.

Is it that ridiculous to question if Derek Jeter is using a banned performance enhancing drug? Can someone explain why ESPN's Skip Bayless is getting blasted for simply pointing out the obvious? I'm reading comments on blogs everywhere of idiot fans calling for Skip's head. Are fans really that stupid or is it just Yankees fans?

The problem with almost all fans is they have to much invested in their teams and players that they can't step back and see the obvious red flags.

Derek Jeter plays for the New York Yankees an organization that seems to encourage Steroid use. Okay maybe that is going a little far but certainly they have a long line of players that have been caught taking banned substances. Of course Roger Clemens and Andy Pettitte, A-Rod, Giambi, David Justice, Mike Stanton, Kevin Brown, Gary Sheffield and even little Chuck Knoblauch. Didn't all those dudes play with Jeter? AND those are just the teammates that got caught!

"Derek Jeter is a legend and to nice of a guy to take steroids" Sure Jeter has a clean image and is very likable. To say nice guys don't take PED's is crazy. Fans, the media, everyone loved Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa I don't recall at the time people saying they weren't "good guys"

Why am I bringing up Jorge Posada? Has to do with his 2007 season. Interesting how he happened to have a stellar season when it was a contract season. The guy went from hitting .272 to .262 to .277 to .338. How does a Catcher or any player shoot up .60 points higher than his previous best season? If Skip Bayless is pointing the finger at Jeter than I am looking at you Jorge Posada. What up with that? What would Posada of had to lose by taking something? He was getting up in age especially being a catcher, his numbers weren't exactly trending upwards, he was playing for one more big contract. A little juice would be more than beneficial. Which brings me back to Jeter who could be doing it to finish out his contract or he might possibly be trying to continue at a high level so he could challenge for the all-time hits record.

Players aren't playing "harder" in contract seasons and suddenly having gigantic jump in stats like the media and fans talk about.

"Oh he is going to have a good season it's his contract year."

That is really insulting to players if you ask me. That would imply PROFESSIONAL athletes coast through most of their careers and rarely give a 100% . These athletes you describe aren't very competitive.

What do the players have to lose if they caught taking PED's? A 50 game suspension? Please financially not getting paid for 50 games is a small sacrifice when you get another long-term extension. It really is a great business decision.

A lot of fans of Jeter will argue "look at the guys body. He isn't on anything." I promise I won't call you ignorant if you believe something similar to that statement. You do realize Melky Cabrera and Bartolo Colon don't exactly look like Giancarlo Stanton? Without getting into organic chemistry with you I will point out the flaw in that quote. Do you know how many "steroids" are out on the black market as well as available through your family doctor? The answer is, not a few. Do you really think they all do the same thing? Just like all drugs, different one's cause different results. If you don't believe me then you can Google "Do all steroids build muscle" and about 50 million sites come up. Prove me wrong. Infact, Most steroids will not get you that much bigger.

Derek certainly could be taking HGH to help recovery time in my opinion. Am I saying he is using something? Of course not. Could he be? Maybe. According to people in the know, Half the league is on something. Lets face it Derek Jeter is 38 years old and he is playing above his career averages. Remember when Jeter couldn't hit at all and everyone was saying he is done? Remember? I'm sure you do it was just last season. The 37 year old Captain was embarrassingly bad to start the season almost gringe worthy for awhile. Okay so you remember that right? So He went from being "done" to an MVP candidate at a year older. It is like magic. Wait a second I believe that is what takers describe HGH as. Strange.

One thing I learned from watching sports if you see something going on that has never happened in the history of the sport then it should raise your suspicion.

Sorry Usain Bolt, I don't believe that some tiny island can be home to the 3 fastest men in the world.

Derek Jeter is 38 years old and playing shortstop at an incredible level he has remarkably found the fountain of youth and has regained his Hall of Fame swing.

You do realize it is quit easy to pass a MLB drug test. You can have 4x the normal level of testosterone in your body than the average person and still not fail. Are you kidding me? You have to be an idiot to get caught. Derek Jeter is no idiot evident by him remaining single all these years. Hey ohhhhhhhh.

Before everyone gets to offended to read on I will say this, the athletes of the Olympic Games deserve admiration and respect for all the hard work they put in. This is no way an attempt to belittle their life long work.

The Olympic Games are no stranger to scandals that is for sure but the horrible judging we see in some of these events is for another time. Scandals are one thing but there has been only one terrorist massacre. That of course took place in Munich during the 1972 Games. Palestinian terrorists murdered 11 Israeli athletes. Jacques Rogges, the President of the International Olympic Committee recently denied requests from the State of Israel and various members of the United States Congress to add a moment of silence to the agenda during the Opening Ceremonies in London.

Why would he deny this request? Seems reasonable to me especially in today's post 9/11 world that we could take a moment and remember the terrorist act that occured during THE GAMES 40 years ago. It's simple Rogges doesn't want to upset any of the participating nations that would be offended by making the Palestinians look bad in anyway and that would be a lot of the countries. They can't take 30 seconds out of an all night borefest that is the Opening Ceremonies to pay respect to the Olympians that died because of those idiot terrorists?

During the next couple weeks you will be force fed the term "OLYMPIC SPIRIT" by all the talking heads in the media. Lets be honest if that isn't the biggest fraudulent slogan drummed up by the International Olympic Committee then I don't know what is. Let's face it the modern Olympics have always been about one thing and that has nothing to do with spirit. Olympics are about the MONEY.

The actions of the IOC are disgusting. As I recall the Olympic's honored Adolf Hitler with his Nazi party in 1936 by letting them host the games, they also held the Games in the Communist Soviet Union in 1980 and in 2008 Beijing was rewarded the games. All these countries make me think of "A peaceful and better world..." right?

They can reward these monster's by selecting these countries to host the Games and all that comes with it but they won't take 30 seconds to remember the horrible act that happened during the Games of 1972. Buck is coach of the Gladiators, the most successful little-league soccer team in the district. Sam is on Buck's soccer team, but to his dad's annoyance his grandfather keeps him on the bench, a humiliation he also visited upon his son decades prior. Buck eventually transfers Sam to the Tigers, the league's worst team.

At Sam's first game with his new team their coach is absent. Rather than forfeit, Phil decides to coach the team, a position he takes up permanently. However, despite Phil's best efforts the team does not seem to improve. In desperation Phil recruits Mike Ditka (played by himself), who is Buck's neighbor and hated enemy.

Ditka introduces Phil to two exceptionally talented Italian boys working in a local butcher's shop. Phil succeeds in gaining their Uncle's permission for them to play for the Tigers. They have an immediate impact, scoring repeatedly. The resulting winning streak makes them serious contenders in the league. After finally winning a couple of games and Phil said that his team was going to go to the finals, Phil and Buck make a bet, if the Gladiators win then Phil would sell his store and work for Buck. If the Tigers win then Buck would hand over his most prized possession, 'The Pele ball', a baby ball struck by the famous player which Phil caught as a child and his father took from him.

Meanwhile, Ditka also introduces Phil to coffee, which rapidly changes him from a mild-mannered caring dad, to a crazed, over-competitive coach, not that different from his father, abusing kids and parents alike. The team's mantra becomes "Get the ball to the Italians", which, though effective, demoralizes his team. In the ultimate over-competitive act he benches his own son for the entire semi-final game.

The Tigers make it to the finals where they face off against the Gladiators. At half-time, the score is two-one to the Gladiators. In a heart-to-heart discussion with his son, Phil realizes the error of his ways. He tells his team to do exactly the opposite of what he taught them. Although the Gladiators score one more goal after half-time, they don't give up hope. Phil gives the goalie a vision test with glasses from the game watchers. From there, Ambrose scores one goal—making the score three-two. After another goal, the score is tied. The team rallys and produces a spectacular team performance to win 4-3, with Sam scoring the winning goal against his uncle Bucky (played by a young Josh Hutcherson), (Buck's child who was born on the exact day as Sam) using a move that he practiced when his dad benched him in the semi-finals.

Honoring the bet, Buck tries to give Phil the ball, but Phil refuses. Making peace with his father, they merge their businesses, realizing there is more to life than winning. -wikipedia
